Because the lake is a closed basin, they are literally tanks for experimental mixes. They can happen strange chemical reactions, but also to emerge anomalous creatures that are found nowhere else on Earth.

Tonle SAP, Cambodia

The unique ecosystem of the Tonle SAP in Cambodia is hard to classify as a lake or river.

In the dry season the Tonle SAP water goes into the Mekong river, but during the monsoon the water flow is so intense that it literally makes back from the river, thereby forming the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. It especially differs in that its course is twice a year changes in the opposite direction.

Because of these unusual conditions, the region is a treasure trove in terms of biological diversity, and it was named a biosphere by UNESCO.

Crater lake, USA
